Refugee Sponsorship
There are several opportunities available for Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents to Sponsor Refugees to come to Canada for a better life…
Through the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents have the opportunity to sponsor refugees from abroad that qualify to come to Canada. Sponsors of refugees are responsible for supporting them with housing, clothing, food, as well as social and emotional support, for the entire length of the sponsorship.
There are several ways to sponsor a refugee to come to Canada. Some of these include:
The Group of Five (G5) Sponsorship Program
collectively sponsor one or more refugees that are living abroad to come to Canada. G5s may only sponsor applicants who are recognized as refugees by either the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) or a foreign state.
Community Sponsorship
when a community organization sponsors refugees to come to Canada. These organizations must commit to providing emotional and income support to the refugees that they sponsor for the full sponsorship period (usually 1 year). Community Sponsors may only sponsor applicants who are recognized as refugees by either the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) or a foreign state.
Individuals who fear prosecution or who would be in danger if they had to leave to their home country may also be eligible to claim Refugee Protection Status from within Canada.
